Abbott’s latest Nazi gaffe

Shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfus was kicked out of Question Time, while fellow Jewish MP Michael Danby walked out in protest during an uproar that followed Prime Minister Tony Abbott comparing Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels.

The outcry erupted this afternoon when the PM described Shorten as the “Dr Goebbels of economic policy”.

It’s just a few weeks after the furore that ensued when Abbott accused the ALP of causing “a holocaust of job losses”.

Following the Goebbels comparison, the PM withdrew the comment and apologised but it didn’t calm tensions.

Amid the protests that followed Dreyfus and two other Labor MPs were ejected from the chamber, while Danby walked out in disgust.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne subsequently noted that Dreyfus had himself invoked a comparison with Goebbels when discussing Abbott’s opposition to the carbon tax in 2011.

In an opinion piece, Dreyfus wrote “Leaving aside the Goebbellian cynicism of labelling a scare campaign a ‘truth campaign’’, I think it shows Abbott’s contempt for the Australian electorate.”
