Baskin has eyes on the prize

MIXED martial arts (MMA) fighter Mark Baskin is only two bouts away from being crowned the Australian Brace Bantamweight champion.

The Moriah College graduate defeated defeated Tom Cruz in a unanimous points decision after three five-minute rounds at Luna Park in Sydney late last month to progress through to the semi-finals of the Brace Bantamweight championship.

“I felt I was up at the end of the fight, but you can never be sure as the fight was still back and forth,” 28-year-old Baskin said reflecting on the moment he waited to hear the decision from the judges.

Baskin, who has his own fitness business, Fitness Redefined, but competes for VT1 Gym in Chatswood trains twice a day at least five days a week.

The Australian Brace Bantamweight semi-final is in September but after travelling for much of 2014, Baskin’s keen to spend time in the ring in the lead-up to the fight.

“I’m very excited for the next fight as now I am actively competing again and have got the first fight out of the way after some time off.

“I am feeling confident and I am excited for my next fight but I’ve learned not to place too much importance on how I should be feeling and rather focus on the present moment.”

Baskin will spar with boxers, kick-boxers, wrestlers, jiu jitsu fighter and other MMA fighters while he waits for his next opponent.

“Since the next fight is a couple of months away I will look to get in a boxing or kickboxing fight to stay active.”
