PROMINENT Jewish community stalwart and centenarian Rebbetzin Bertha Porush died earlier this month in Jerusalem at the age of 105. Born Bertha Link in Berlin in 1903, Rebbetzin Porush migrated to London and then Australia in 1940, after her husband Rabbi Dr Israel Porush became chief rabbi of The Great Synagogue in Sydney.

“Mrs Porush was more than a faithful support to her husband she was a leader in her own right, expecting the women of the community, in particular, to take her advice and follow her lead,” Rabbi Raymond Apple said.

Following their three decades in Sydney, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Porush moved to Melbourne to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Isi Leibler, and their grandchildren. She made aliyah in 1999, aged 96, and lived with her family in Jerusalem.
