A NEW Israel program will be available next year for secondary school graduates that nurtures independence and choice while enriching the connection to Israeli culture and history.

Israel Highway, a subsidiary of Jewish Agency for Israel, is a five-month adventure geared towards 17 to 19-year-olds that allows participants to make their own decisions on how they wish to spend their time during their gap year.

Split into three components over the five-month journey, Israel Highway boasts an opportunity to live independently, to explore the country and to live like an Israeli.

Uniting young Jewish adults from Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom, it begins with a month in Jerusalem to visit the holy sites, learn Hebrew at an Ulpan and reflect on Jewish identity and Zionism.

Before a unique heritage tour through Poland and Berlin, participants live in apartments in central Tel Aviv where they volunteer with a range of organisations and lap up the bustling city.

The final 40 days is where the program differs from the rest, with participants choosing from volunteering with United Israel Appeal (UIA), hiking the National Trail, partaking in a healthy lifestyle program at the Wingate Institute or working on a kibbutz.

The basic cost of the program is US$11,500 which includes meals, transportation, staff and security.

Program director of Israel Highway Amir Lavi lauded the program for its emphasis on self-exploration and exposing participants to the many facets of Israeli lifestyle.

“Israel Highway is a unique program that is centred on the participant. A gap year is all about the person taking it and the three circles offered by Israel Highway provide an opportunity for the participant to define and shape their Israel experience.

“I have been involved with many gap year programs for many years now and this program has been built on the best elements and experiences I have come across in my time.”
