STATE Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott launched a video on Monday night highlighting the openness of the Jewish community to Jews of diverse sexual orientation.

Created by members of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria’s (JCCV) Jews All Diverse and Equal group, the nine-minute film features a group of young people who identify as LGBTI discussing how they’re able to express their Jewish identity without encountering too many issues along the way.

Discussing the ease with which she feels part of the community, one participant admits, “Occasionally there will be some conflict with the more Orthodox streams of Judaism, but generally it has been quite positive.”

Another says, “It’s incredible to see how much openness and progress has been made in certain streams and communities in Judaism, but I think we have a way to go and I’d like to see those little pockets of change become a big, resounding ‘yes, we welcome all Jews, Jews of all identities and that includes LGBTI Jews.’”

The film was launched at the JCCV plenum, with JCCV president Jennifer Huppert stating, “The aim is for a fully welcoming and respectful Jewish community, where Jews of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity participate actively in the community.

“Everyone must be treated with respect, dignity and equity,” she added. “We want people to feel included and we want to provide some support mechanisms for young Jewish people so they know that they are welcomed in the Jewish community.

“We ask for all Jewish community organisations to help disseminate the video so that community members can hear these personal perspectives of our young Jewish LGBTI people.”

Praising the initiative, Scott said, “It is wonderful to see the Jewish community focus on love and respect. It is not about tolerance. The JCCV is to be commended for taking a leading role in this area. The government has started to include LGBTI issues in the multicultural space, so this step by the Jewish community is particularly welcome.”

Scott also spoke at the plenum about his trip to Israel last year.

He told those in attendance that Israel and Australia have a lot in common and can learn from each other in terms of social cohesion, entrepreneurship and innovation.
