THE Maccabi Ajax First XI has fallen 23 runs short of victory in its match against Burnley CYMS, despite having chances to reel in the target of 209.

The Firsts took to the crease chasing a hefty total for victory at Burnley, but came up short despite a strong showing at the top of the order.

Brett Wiener and Josh Sacks got the team off to a good start, before Sacks was dismissed for 36.

Wiener also hit plenty of early runs, but was sent packing for 30 before he could kick on.

Dean Wiener then came to the crease and kept the runs flowing, but followed his brother back to the pavilion when he was on his way for 20.

The Wiener show continued as patriarch Julien came to reinvigorate the run chase, outscoring both his sons.

However, the lower order didn’t offer sufficient resistance to take Maccabi over the line, with skipper Julien left stranded on 35 and the Firsts bowled out for 185.

The Second XI defended its score of 206 to notch its maiden win of the season.

Opening bowlers Adam Paykel (2-28) and Gid Gelbart (2-60) struck with important early wickets, putting the pressure on the visiting batsmen.

Simon Fisher (4-40) then tore through the line-up, taking four invaluable wickets and putting Maccabi in the box seat.

After Jeff Nadelman struck, Adam Trytell snared a rare wicket – his first for the Jewish club – to have Eastern Flow dismissed for 178.

Matt Gamsu was busy with the gloves, racking up three stumpings and a catch.

The Third XI suffered a heavy defeat at home to Parkville District, losing by a staggering 236 runs.

Batting first, the visitors piled on the runs, posting 3-295 after their 45 overs.

In response, the Thirds crumbled to a paltry 59, with Daniel Sneider (26) posting nearly half the score.

The Silver Arc Fourth XI completed a convincing 60-run home win over Power House on Sunday, with a polished team performance.

Maccabi had solid contributions across the card, which made for a competitive total of 108.

Contributions were equally solid with the ball as Power House struggled with the hosts’ tight and accurate bowling attack, managing just 48 from 35.1 overs.

Ian Jones (3-7) and Josh Jones (3-10) were the most devastating, while Simon Morawetz (2-2) and Akiva Epstein (1-2) were equally tough to score off.

The Firsts’ next match against South Yarra starts at 1pm on Saturday at Como Park West (Melway: 58 G2).
