AFTER making a name for himself on the hit Network Ten show Bondi Rescue, Adriel Young is now plying his trade as a triathlete and will be heading to Israel to represent Australia at the Maccabiah Games in July.

Young made the switch only a year ago on a borrowed bike and by the time he took part in his third major race in January, he’d qualified for the Hawaii Iron Man, which he’ll tackle in October after the Games.

“It’s all happened a bit quickly,” Young said.

“By my third race I won my age group and was the first non-pro across the line and got a spot in Hawaii.”

The 25-year-old grew up with a surfing background and is a professional lifeguard, as seen on Bondi Rescue.

He also played rugby with Maccabi, but was most recently introduced to triathlons by Australian and world champion Craig Alexander at a charity event.

Since then, Young has trained 10 hours a week and has risen to stardom thanks to several stellar performances.

In his first club championship, Young trumped the field by a whopping eight minutes, before upsetting several professional athletes to win the Auckland 70.3, a half ironman, to set up a berth at the Ironman World Championships later this year.

Young’s rise to fame has earned him great praise from Maccabi legend Anne Besser. “Adriel is a natural talent, he does not have a coach and is just an all-round Mr Nice Guy,” Besser said.

“Adriel rapidly stamped on all comers big time in his first race at Maccabi and beat the field, finishing with a surprised grin on a face that sponsors are going to fight for.”

Bondi Rescue airs at 6.30pm on Sunday nights on Network Ten.
