Getting to grips with Israeli life

Shnatties land in Israel.

AS SOON as had they arrived in Israel, the 144 Australian shnatties spending their gap year in the Holy Land got a glimpse into the security issues facing the State, with a trip to Ramat David, where they visited the combat F16 squadron.

The excursion included a visit to the briefing room, a presentation about the squadron, unique footage of the Iraq nuclear facility, round-table discussions with the pilots and ground crew on similarities and differences between life in Israel and the Diaspora, and a close-up view of the jet fighter.

The visit was part of the joint Zionist Federation of Australia/Australian Zionist Youth Council opening seminar, which also included a program in which the various movements presented their ideologies.

The shnatties also visited the Kotel and Machaneh Yehudah Market in Jerusalem, and enjoyed a special Shabbat celebration at Ma’aleh Hachamishah, a kibbutz outside of Jerusalem.

“It was an incredible experience being able to explore Jerusalem and Tel Aviv,” said participant Jacqui Cohen.

“It was amazing to connect with other movements and forge new relationships.”
