RABBI Mendel Kastel will be honoured as a rabbinical fellow of the Great Synagogue in recognition of his 14 years of service to the shul.

Rabbi Kastel, who has worked with Rabbis Raymond Apple and Jeremy Lawrence, was involved in many youth and outreach programs, arranged events at the synagogue with special guests including Jimmy Barnes, organised hospital visits and was in regular contact with congregants as part of his duties.

“I’m very humbled and thankful for being considered for this title,” Rabbi Kastel told The AJN.

“Spending 14 years [at the Great] is a lifetime; my kids grew up in the shul, the shul is part of my life. It’s very nice to once again to reconnect with the shul and be honoured with this special title.”

Rabbi Dr Ben Elton told The AJN, “We are delighted to be marking Rabbi Kastel’s 14 years of outstanding service to the Great Synagogue and that he will be rejoining the Great Synagogue family.

“Although he won’t be a full-time member of the ministerial team we are looking forward to working with him to help serve the Jews of Sydney and continue the revival of the Great Synagogue.

“We hope that people will join us on December 12 to help celebrate this happy occasion.”

The community is invited to a special Shabbat service for Rabbi Mendel Kastel at the Great Synagogue this Saturday, December 12 from 8.45am.
