Israel braces for new round of border protests
IDF forces will not allow Palestinian protestors marking the upcoming ‘Naksa Day’ this Sunday to breach Israel’s borders as was the case during the recent ‘Nakba Day,’ Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Thursday.
Speaking at the international high-tech conference in Jerusalem, the PM slammed the complicity of Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas in what he termed ‘provocations,’ adding that the same elements are expected to challenge Israel’s sovereignty again in the coming days.
“Just like any other state in the world, Israel reserves the right and duty to safeguard its borders,” he said, adding that his instructions to the IDF are to act with restraint but with the determination required to protect Israel’s borders, communities and citizens.
Meanwhile, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz said that the IDF is preparing for ‘Naksa Day at all border areas. ‘We will deploy our troops and our commanding officers on the frontlines,” he said.
On Wednesday, Israel issued a harsh warning to Syria and Lebanon ahead of ‘Naksa Day’ – the 44th anniversary of the Six-Day War. Israel is raising its alert level ahead of Sunday’s events, which may involve marches on Israel’s borders similar to those held on ‘Nakba Day.’
“We shall use all means to prevent an attack on our sovereignty. You will be held accountable,” the message said.
Lebanon has meanwhile declared the Israeli borderland, including Fatima Gate, a closed military zone ahead ‘Naksa Day’ Sunday, according to a report by the local Al-Nahar.
