Israeli student in Oz among Malaysian Airlines victims

A 27-year-old Israeli, who was studying in Australia, was among the 298 victims who died when Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crashed in Ukraine.

Itamar Avnon was a dual Dutch-Israeli citizen who was a second-year Bachelor of Business student at Melbourne’s Swinburne University

An acquaintance of Avnon said he had been in the Netherlands for a wedding and was on his way back to Australia via Malaysia.

The plane is believed to have been downed Thursday in Ukraine’s east, possibly by pro-Russian separatists.

Avnon served in the Israel Defense Forces as a paratrooper in 2007. His father Dov Avnon and his wife, Jeannet, have two other children, Jonathan and Ruth.

A statement from Swinburne University released last week said  “The Swinburne University of Technology community was devastated today to learn that one of our international students, Mr Itamar Avnon, was a passenger on Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
