Jerusalem mayor cancels visit

Jerusalem mayor Nir Barket has cancelled his visit to Australia.

Jerusalem’s mayor Nir Barkat has cancelled his visit to Australia, which was due to start today.

Barkat was due to speak to audiences in Sydney and Melbourne for the Jewish National Fund (JNF) but recently informed them that he would have to delay leaving Israel due to the outbreak of violence by terrorists across Israel.

Last night in Israel violence intensified and Barkat informed JNF that he would have to cancel his visit, but would still speak at functions via a live video hook-up.

JNF Australia CEO Dan Springer said that it is obviously disappointing, but understandable, in the current climate and called on the community to stand by Israel.

“The Mayor has asked that as many people as possible come and show solidarity with Israel and our People,” Springer said.

“This is beyond fundraising, this about standing up with Israel when it counts. Now it counts and now it is needed.”
