MACCABI Australia’s 33rd Junior Carnival got underway on Wednesday night in a dazzling opening ceremony at Melbourne Pavilion, setting the tone for an action-packed week of sport and social events for more than 440 Australian and New Zealand participants.

Hosted by Paralympian swimmer Sam Bramham, the ceremonies began with each state’s team marching behind banners amid much noise and enthusiasm, in similar fashion to the Olympic Games.

The small contingent from across the Tasman treated the room to a stirring rendition of the Haka, while Victorian shirts – with the biggest group – filled every corner.

Host Bramham maintained a high level of energy throughout proceedings and also shared inspirational stories of overcoming the obstacles that disability poses, both to himself and fellow amputees he has met around the world.

Maccabi Australia president Barry Smorgon OAM and Maccabi Victoria president Joe Dorfman delivered messages of support, noting the significance of Junior Carnivals in the cross-country friendships formed, which was followed by an address from Victorian Attorney-General and Minster of Racing Martin Pakula.

Carnival manager Justin Lipson was honoured for his efforts over the past year, along with the many Maccabi volunteers who have given their time to create an unforgettable week, which, in a Carnival first, will include a fluorescent evening party in the form of a Neon Run.
