THE former principal of a Melbourne Jewish school has been arrested in Israel following an extradition request from Australian police.

Malka Leifer fled to Israel in 2008 amid claims that she had sexually abused children at the Adass School.

According to Israeli website Ynet, Leifer abused three sisters at the school between 2004 and 2008.

The AJN reported last month that the former principal was facing extradition.

Urging anyone with any information to contact police, Manny Waks of victim advocacy group Tzedek said Leifer’s arrest “should be seen in the greater context of the ongoing child sexual abuse scandal that has been plaguing the Australian Jewish community in recent years where we have seen numerous convictions in both Melbourne and Sydney.

“This is further evidence that the tide is turning within our community; many victims are no longer willing to remain silent, and neither is the community. I commend the alleged victims in this case for their courage and tenacity in pursuing this matter.

Further details in this week’s AJN.
