Maccabi Bowls Carnival a success

Dozens attend Jewish bowls tournament in QLD.

MORE than 60 bowlers from NSW, Victoria and Western Australia attended the 15th Maccabi Australian Lawn Bowls Carnival on the Gold Coast late last month.

NSW won the men’s shield and drew with Western Australia for the women’s shield. NSW teammates Jack Kampel and Bernard Fridman won the division-A pairs event, and the division-A triples event was won by Paul Baker, Les Brem, Ian Ossher.

Maccabi NSW Lawn Bowls Guild president Louis Platus said it was an outstanding event and a real success for everyone involved.

“This has been going ever since Senior Carnival stopped so this is the only thing comparable, and it really is a great experience for everyone,” Platus said.

“The bowls is always very serious, it doesn’t matter if you are playing in the premier league or with friends, but the Carnival is about the camaraderie and the friends that you see.

“It really is an amazing experience and a great event where we see old friends and just have a great time. “We would go out to a restaurant and after everyone else left we would still be sitting there telling jokes and laughing late into the night.”

Victorian team manager for the event Ben Goldstein said it was a competitive and friendly event.

“Maccabi is one of the few clubs in Victoria that does not play pennant in its own right, so this event is about befriending interstate Jewish competitors and over time a lot of us have become good friends,” Goldstein said.

“The event is about representing your state in a friendly atmosphere while still trying your best.”
