Max Brenner hit again by protestors

THE vibrant multiculturalism of Sydney’s Newtown was shattered last Saturday as the latest round of anti-Israel Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) protests took place outside the Max Brenner shop on King Street.

As with previous similar demonstrations, activists bore placards accusing the Jewish State of apartheid, war crimes and murder.

Jewish community member Rachel Lustig, who was among a counter group showing support for Israel, said there were around 50 anti-Israel activists.

“They blocked the footpath. I felt I was under personal attack,” she said.

She described the activists as “aggressive and impassioned”, and some of their words as “absolutely horrifying”.

The protest follows a spate of recent demonstrations outside Max Brenner outlets in Sydney and Melbourne.

The last protest in Sydney took place outside the Max Brenner shop, situated in Parramatta, on June 9.

Community member Shirlee Finn, who attended both the Parramatta and Newtown protests in solidarity with Israel, labelled Saturday’s protest in Newtown as the more intimidating demonstration.

“There was no room for customers to get through. They really blocked everybody.”
