NSW Premier Mike Baird paid tribute to former NSW Jewish Board of Deputies (JBOD) president Yair Miller at the organisation’s AGM last Tuesday night.

“We celebrate a man who has done remarkable things. A man who through his service and through his heart has promoted his cause,” he said. “He leaves the state, I think, in a richer place.”

The Premier also praised JBOD CEO Vic Alhadeff, making mention of the special friendship the two share.

He acknowledged the challenges Alhadeff faced last month when he came under fire and eventually resigned as chair of the Community Relations Commission over an email update about Israel’s military operation.

“It has been incredibly difficult but your leadership, your integrity and pursuit of harmony above self is something we want to pay tribute and testament to,” he said.

Baird also condemned the recent anti-Semitic bus incident, but noted that “the good news in NSW is that we don’t see that on a regular basis”.

“The tireless work that people do, particularly here – Vic, Yair, the incoming [JBOD] president Jeremy [Spinak] – together they help knit together this peace in NSW,” he said. “It’s something incredibly powerful, something that we should celebrate.”
