Serry gets Vic call up

YOUNG cricket gun Jacob Serry has been selected to play for the Victorian team at next week’s Cricket Australia Under-17 National Championships.

The 16-year-old will join 12 of the state’s best junior players on the tour to Adelaide, which he said is a journey he can’t wait to embark on.

“It’s an opportunity I’m very proud of,” Serry told The AJN.

“It’s going to be a great challenge for me, because it’s an incredibly high standard and some of these players have represented Australia.

“But I’m looking forward to it and it’s definitely a step up from anything I’ve ever played before.”

Serry is set to open the batting for Victoria, following a superb performance for the Metropolitan team in its hitout against a Country side, where he smashed 12 boundaries and a six on his way to an unbeaten 101.

He also managed to notch up 67 in a recent practice match.

“Scoring a hundred anytime is great, but it’s certainly the highest level I’ve ever achieved it,” Serry said.

“It gives me plenty of confidence heading into the tournament, but it really doesn’t count for much, I’ve got to follow it up in Adelaide.”

The Caulfield Grammar year 11 student is a regular feature for Prahran Cricket Club’s Second XI in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, as well as representative side Inner South East Scorpions.

But with his studies ramping up as he completes his VCE, his first priority is to play for school.

“I’ve opened the batting for Prahran this season, and it’s been great exposure to senior cricket, but now I won’t be able to play for them or Inner South East,” Serry said.

“Now I’ve got to try and find a good balance between work and cricket, and obviously I want to put as much time into cricket, but school study is also important.”
