Songs from the heart

SINGER-songwriter Rita Satch loves to create music based on her personal experiences of life.

She has written and recorded five songs, based on events in her life, for her latest self-titled EP which will be launched on June 26 at a function at the Toff in Town in Melbourne.

“It’s really exciting to have a new EP out,” says Satch. “I love writing romantic songs that have been inspired by my experiences. Every song has a story behind it.”

Two singles from the EP have already been released – Not Ready For Love and Love You Like I Do.

“The song Not Ready For Love was written more than a year ago after I broke up a relationship that I was in because I was not ready for love,” the 24-year-old singer admits.

This album follows her debut six-song EP titled Awoken that was released in 2011.

Satch was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in the former Soviet Union and her family settled in Melbourne when she was only 10 months old.

She started playing the violin when she was seven and began singing at 16 while attending Bialik College. She is fluent in French and Russian as well as English.

Satch has won many music awards including the B’nai B’rith Victoria Scholarship in 2008, and has performed at communal functions such as Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations and the B’nai B’rith Night of Stars concert.

In recent years she has become well known on the local jazz circuit as her music has evolved through soul and funk influences.

“I’ve become more daring and experimental with my music, listening to different styles such as hip-hop and soul,” she says.

“I’m open to new genres of music and like being more creative.”

Satch enlisted the help of local producer Ryan Ritchie (True Live, Kimbra, Paris Wells) to work on the new EP to help diversify her sound and production.

“I’m very proud of the sound we have created,” she says.

The EP launch at the Toff in Town includes entertainment by Roscoe James Irwin, Albert Salt and DJ Mike Gurrieri.

Rita Satch’s EP launch is at the Toff in Town, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne on June 26 at 7.30pm. Bookings: www.thetoffintown.com.
