ST Ives resident Michelle Klass is calling for more pedestrian crossing facilities along Mona Vale Road after her 13-year-old son Shannon was injured in an accident last month.

While crossing the six lane main road to get to the bus stop near the corner of Killeaton Street, Shannon was hit by a passing car.

He is still recovering from head injuries sustained in the accident and cannot currently participate in school sport.

“He’s alive and he’s well, but he does have a brain injury,” Klass told The AJN.

“He is under the ongoing care of a GP and a neurologist.”

Klass does not want further incidents like this to occur, describing that stretch of road as a “death trap” for pedestrians.

“Shannon was just one victim in this whole awful mess,” Klass said.

“I see people on a daily basis – children and adults alike – running across the road, weaving in and out of the traffic, by their dozens every day.

“It’s just a matter of time before someone actually gets killed.”

She is calling on the state government to place another signalled pedestrian crossing or build a pedestrian bridge over Mona Vale Road near Link Road and Woodbury Road, especially for the safety of residents who use a bus stop in that area each morning.

Klass has taken the matter up with her local state member Jonathan O’Dea, and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) are aware of the matter.

An RMS spokesperson told The AJN that there are “already five crossing facilities” between Link Road and Kitchener Road, but that the area is under observation.

“There are pedestrian crossings available to cross the six lane Mona Vale Road at St Ives, including a signalised crossing at Link Road, 130 metres from Killeaton Road which provides access to students who attend two nearby schools,” the RMS spokesperson said.

“A number of factors are taken into account to provide a signalised crossing, including the number of vehicles and pedestrians at each intersection.

“Traffic and pedestrian movements will continue to be monitored along this section of Mona Vale Road.”
