Teddy in the House

HAVING starred on stages around the globe in everything from Don Giovanni to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, you might have thought nothing could faze legendary Kiwi baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

But the 48-year-old singer has admitted he’s a bit daunted at the prospect of having to perform My Yiddishe Momme at Jewish House’s 30th anniversary gala dinner on December 1.

Rhodes, who is currently staring as the King of Siam in The King and I at the Sydney Opera House until November 1, recently visited the Bondi crisis centre, where he was shown around the facility by CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel, met temporary residents and learnt about the Project 2500 scheme, which aims to help 2500 homeless people over the next three years.

Rhodes said: “Visiting Jewish House and hearing the stories of the work they do here makes me think we should all be grateful for what we have.

“I have great admiration for the work that Mendel and his team at Jewish House are doing, devoting their lives to help others.”

He added, “I’ll be very nervous on the night, now that I’ll have to learn to sing My Yiddishe Momme, but it will be nice to bring some joy to a serious social situation.”
