Wolper grants announced
SIX organisations will share the spoils in the Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation’s first round of grants. Launched in February, the foundation’s mission is to support and fund health and wellbeing initiatives that deliver benefits to the Jewish and general communities.
“We have this month allocated additional funding over and above the original seed funding to enable us to extend the foundation’s reach into the community,” president Daniel Goulburn said.
The recipient organisations are Camp Sababa and Sababa Lagamba, Gift of Life Australia, the Hereditary Cancer Clinic, Jewish House, the NSW Friendship Circle and Parkinson’s NSW.
Camp Sababa and Sababa Lagamba coordinator Nicky Franks told The AJN the teams were “absolutely delighted” to receive a grant for the camps they run for children and young adults with varying medical needs and disabilities. “We have full-time nurses and doctors attending the camp – only some of whom are volunteers, and we also need night nurses,” Franks said. “This can become very costly, so Wolper’s generous donation means we can rest easy with the knowledge that we can afford the best nursing and medical care for our campers.”
NSW Friendship Circle’s Rabbi Sender Kavka said the organisation was “thrilled” to receive funding for its fortnightly Sunday Circle program. “The program is crucial for the sense of wellbeing and community for children with special needs, and the teenagers that volunteer to play with, befriend and get to know them equally benefit from the kindness of Wolper,” Rabbi Kavka said.
“The funds will enable us to set up a sensory-friendly play space and engage professionals to direct the play to achieve therapeutic benefits.”
Goulburn noted that during its history, Wolper has demonstrated “a strong commitment to meeting and improving the healthcare needs and wellbeing of the community”.
“Through the foundation we are able to support other organisations and individuals working towards the same goals,” Goulburn said.
