World hopes and prays as ceasefire begins

People around the world held their breath at 3pm on Tuesday (Australian time) as the 72-hour ceasefire began.

Israeli troops withdrew to a defensive position on the Gaza border.

Australia foreign minister Julie Bishop welcomed the humanitarian ceasefire.

“The violence must stop as soon as possible,” Bishop said.

“Israel and Hamas must fully commit to and implement this humanitarian pause. Then the priority must be to reach a permanent ceasefire agreement that brings an end to the killing and recrimination. All efforts must be directed at these objectives.”
