Abbott: ‘Israel’s right to self defence’
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has reiterated the government’s line that Israel has a right to defend itself from rocket attacks from Gaza.
Interviewed on Radio 3AW, Melbourne, by Neil Mitchell this morning, the PM was asked whether Australia supported a ground invasion of Gaza by Israel.
It followed the entry of IDF tanks into the Strip yesterday as part of an operation to shut down tunnels being used by terrorists attempting to infiltrate Israel.
Asked about the incursion, Abbott responded, “We certainly support Israel’s right to exist. We support Israel’s right to self-defence and we deplore the attacks on Israel from Gaza. Now I don’t have any further detail on what may or may not be happening at the moment. All I know is that Israel is regularly rocketed from Gaza. That shouldn’t happen.”
