AJAX dauntless in defeat

AJAX’s top water polo side has fallen just short of triumph in the winter competition, going down to Melbourne Collegians 4-2 in last week’s grand final.

Having finished on top of the ladder with seven wins and two losses, AJAX was going into the decider with plenty of confidence.

But a poor first half saw the side fall two goals behind at the main break.

It was always going to be a tough task to come back, and second-half goals to Ross Heideman and Gabriel Rodriguez were still not enough to get the team over the line.

“We played pretty well in defence, but we just couldn’t score,” president and player Paul Fleiszig said.

“We know we’re good enough and we showed during the regular season we could beat them. We just have to work harder.”

AJAX will now prepare its three teams for the State Championships, beginning at the end of the month.

“This was a very positive season for our club and we can’t wait to get started playing again,” Fleiszig said.
