All set for Melbourne breakfast with Bishop
The Victorian Liberal Friends of Israel are hosting a Pre-Rosh Hashanah Breakfast with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop on August 31 in Caulfield South, Melbourne.
THE Victorian Liberal Friends of Israel (LFI) are hosting a Pre-Rosh Hashanah Breakfast with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop.
Organisers are anticipating an event of full capacity, with more than 150 attendees expected to attend the breakfast on on Friday, August 31 at Central Community Centre in Caulfield South.
The LFI was launched one year ago, and is a unique collaboration between State and Federal politicians.
State Member for Caulfield David Southwick, alongside Federal Member for Goldstein Tim Wilson and Federal Senator James Paterson have come together as patrons of the organisation. Bishop spoke when it was established at Beth Weizmann last year.
“It will be a great opportunity to hear more from Julie — about her involvement at the United Nations, her broader role in the capacity as Foreign Affairs Minister, and of course the more pressing issues, and the relationship between Israel and Australia,” enthused Southwick.
“Obviously, we understand there are complexities, but the move of the Australian embassy to Jerusalem is first and foremost on the minds of many.”
Turning to the domestic front, Southwick also spoke on the Liberal ambition to take the newly named seat of Macnamara (formerly Melbourne Ports, held by longstanding Federal Labor Minister Michael Danby) as a prime objective of LFI.
“What unites myself, Wilson and Paterson is our unwavering support for Israel — but we also acknowledge this seat geographically holds the largest Jewish population in Victoria — and is an electorate with one of the largest Jewish populations in Australia,” explained Southwick.
“Pre-selections have opened for a Liberal candidate, and we want to ensure that we have the finest representative to best serve the Jewish community.”
Josh Burns, senior adviser to Premier Daniel Andrews, was endorsed as the Labor candidate for Macnamara last month.
