THE son of an American serviceman who spent a week in Sydney during World War II is seeking information about members of the local Jewish community that his father encountered.

A United States army physician stationed in Port Moresby, New Guinea, Perry Goldman spent a week’s leave in Sydney in June 1943 with his friend and colleague, Sid Friedlander.

Sidney Goldman – of Key West, Florida – is in the process of transcribing his father’s diary.

“He enjoyed a wonderful week which included being hosted by two local residents, Joe Goldberg and Monty Goldstein,” Sidney Goldman told The AJN.

“I am trying to research these two gentlemen to learn more about them. Goldberg was a footwear sales representative.

“The diary also references Maxine Goldberg.”

The diary lists Joe Goldberg as living at 10 Cross Street, “overlooking the harbour” (no suburb listed, but presumably Double Bay), while it says Monty Goldstein lived in Dover Heights.

The diary also describes a Maurice Chester hosting Goldman for dinner, but does not specify where he lived.

An entry from June 12 mentions Maxine Goldberg, then an entry from June 16 says, “Sid and I had Colman, Norma and Maxine for dinner tonight” though its unclear if this is the same Maxine.

While in Sydney, Perry Goldman stayed at the Red Cross Club in Kings Cross, shopped at David Jones and Gowings, visited the Australian Hotel, a nightclub called Romano’s and also took a Manly ferry.

Sidney Goldman hopes to leave a multimedia collection based on the diary to his children.
