TENNIS star Paul Arber has taken out the 2012 Victorian Jewish Tennis Championships, beating up-and-comer Luke Goldberg 6-1, 6-3 in the final at the Leon Haskin Tennis Centre on the weekend.

The men’s open singles final was a one-sided affair, which saw Arber notch up his second consecutive championship win and continue his undefeated streak.

“I’m still happy to be able to move around the court and play at the level I am,” Arber told The AJN.

“But I would take a pennant win over my personal win any day and I’m looking forward to next season.”

The 36-year-old, who won two State Grade Pennant Player of the Year awards and led Kooyong to two premierships, put on a dominant display and was far too good for youngster Goldberg.

“Luke is a great player with a good future and we are lucky to have him at the Maccabi Tennis Club,” Arber said.

Goldberg did in fact come away with some success, winning the men’s open doubles with older brother Simon after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over former champions Harvey Kaplan and Steve Gostin.

Another former titleholder, Stephen Sharp, took out the men’s senior doubles with his brother Danny, defeating Clive and Joel Fredman 6-1, 6-4.

Sharp also teamed with Sharon Kaye to smash Michael Zyskind and Lauren Yarrow 6-0, 6-0 in the mixed doubles decider.

In the men’s B singles final, Marcus Frajman got over Errol Dorfan 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a marathon match that lasted almost three hours.

Joel Tauber defeated Jarred Joffe 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 to win the boys’ under-17 title, while Jake Givoni toppled Adam Blumberg 6-4, 6-3 in the boys’ under-14 competition.

Damon Flicker and David Sacho put on a clinic to defeat Saul and Daniel Lotzoff 6-0 6-0 in the boys’ under-14 doubles final, and Kerryn James was named the winner of the girls’ under-14 singles round robin, with Dana Dryzun and Teegan Slomoi finishing equal second.
