Artist’s self-portrait an Archibald top pick
CONTINUING her success at last year’s Archibald Prize, Sydney-based artist Karyn Zamel has again achieved recognition as a finalist – this time, for an impressive character study of herself.

CONTINUING her success at last year’s Archibald Prize, Sydney-based artist Karyn Zamel has again achieved recognition as a finalist – this time, for an impressive character study of herself.
Zamel’s three-year long process of studying the intricate details of her own face culminated in her artwork, an oil on canvas, called My self.
Karyn Zamel’s self-portrait is a finalist in this year’s Archibald Prize.
“I found this process confronting, as I was seated less than a metre from the mirror. It was a close-up look at myself, which led me to reflect upon my past, my present and my future,” commented Zamel, who was born in Wellington, New Zealand, and moved to Sydney with her family as a child.
Zamel was recognised as a finalist in last year’s competition for her portrait of artist Marina Finlay.
