Aubor honoured at cricket awards

THE Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club recognised its star achievers at its awards night recently, with batsman Matt Aubor winning the Ray Saffer Club Champion award by just one vote ahead of all-rounders David Fayman and David Majtlis.

THE Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club recognised its star achievers at its awards night recently, with batsman Matt Aubor winning the Ray Saffer Club Champion award by just one vote ahead of all-rounders David Fayman and David Majtlis.

Aubor, who was the standout batsman in the Second XI, polled 15 votes for the season, just one ahead of Fayman and Majtlis, who both starred for the Firsts.

The club champion also picked up the Rob Laurie award for the most determined cricketer and the Second XI batting award, after smashing 338 runs for the year, including two 50s and a not-out innings.

Fayman, who also finished equal top of the Mercantile Cricket Association A-grade best and fairest, was named the winner of the Leonard Burman Club Championship for the best First XI cricketer, after a stellar season with both the bat and ball.

He was also presented with the club aggregate bowling award, thanks to his 31 wickets from 10 matches, as well as the Les Kausman award for the club’s most consistent player.

Mark Soffer won the First XI batting award for the most runs and Majtlis took home the First XI bowling award for the most wickets.

Star young bowlers Adam Klein and Adam Kahlberg were also recognised for their incredible seasons.

Fifteen-year-old Klein, who earned six call-ups to the Firsts side due to his solid bowling, was the much-deserving winner of the Michael Klinger rising star award and the Ernie Adler award for the most improved cricketer.

Kahlberg, who brought great enthusiasm to the club throughout the year, was given the Harry Newhouse award for the most dedicated trainer.

The Hans Spitz award for the best clubman was split between two worthy recipients in Ian Jones and Adam Paykel, who both showed tremendous passion and dedication to the club on and off field over the course of the season.

The Kurt Defris award for off-field service to the club was also split between president Leon Jacobs and Simeon Goldenberg, who were both recognised for their incredible commitment to the club over many years.

The Maccabi AJAX team of the year included Brett Wiener, Zev Aron, David Majtlis, Mark Soffer, Josh Sacks, Osher Klein, David Fayman, Matt Aubor, Nadav Greenberger, Adam Klein and Simon Fisher (12th man).
