THE 2017 Australian Open kicked off in style on January 16 with several Jewish players making it into the second round.

Crowd favourite Dudi Sela was supported by hundreds of blue-and-white-clad fans as the Israeli came from one set down to defeat Spain’s Marcel Granollers in a four-set match.

Argentinian Diego Schwartzman will go into the second round of the tournament after an impressive straight-sets victory over 22nd seed Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, and, after qualifying last week, 20-year-old American Noah Rubin has set up a second-round match with 17-time Grand Slam winning champion Roger Federer.

The only sour note came on Tuesday night when Italian Camila Giorgi went down to 12th seed Timea Bacsinszky in the deciding third set.
