Awards for achievers

FROM volunteering for the needy to achieving professional success, Jewish young adults from around Australia will have the opportunity to be recognised for their  efforts with the opening of nominations for the B’nai B’rith Alfred Dreyfus Anti-Defamation Unit Jewish Youth and Young Adult Achievement Awards.

Unit president Ernie Friedlander said the aim of the awards is to acknowledge and celebrate effort, commitment and initiative within and outside of the community.

“I think it’s important to give recognition for achievements and contributions because, after all, there are many young people sacrificing their time and who have made enormous changes through their input and ideas,” Friedlander told The AJN.

The awards, which encompass both youth and young adult divisions, cover three categories: contribution to the Jewish community; contribution to Australian society, which includes social justice; and Israel advocacy.

Last year’s young adult winner, Shayna Slotar, believes the awards are vital in recognising volunteers who put in extra effort and go unnoticed.

“They don’t expect awards, but sometimes they should be acknowledged for the good work they do for the community,” Slotar explained.

“The more volunteers are noticed, the more incentive they have to do even more.”

The awards will see three young adults and three youth winners chosen later this year with cash prizes for each.
