IN One Voice is back for 2018, promising a plethora of activities to please. The Jewish culture street festival follows the success of last year’s event, which attracted a stellar attendance of 7000 people.
IN One Voice is back for 2018, promising a plethora of activities to please. The Jewish culture street festival follows the success of last year’s event, which attracted a stellar attendance of 7000 people.
This year is “bigger, better and bolder,” says festival manager, Judith Weizman. “It will have a whole new look and feel.”
The festival will be held in Selwyn Street, Elsternwick on Sunday March 18. This will take in the old ABC site, with community group stalls, the Nosh Tent, With One Brush Art Exhibition and the Kids’ Zone flagged to occupy the site.
The art competition, With One Brush, is open to artists of the Jewish community. There are separate sections and prizes for adults an school children.
The Nosh Tent, will have a special Pesach theme.
“With Pesach less than two weeks away, we’ll be calling on cooks from all corners of the world, modern and traditional, to get the juices flowing with demonstrations and tastings galore,” enthused Weizman.
In One Voice is one of the few Jewish pluralist events in Melbourne.
“[It]…brings together the Jewish and wider community, sharing our rich and diverse culture. On stage, voices will resonate in English, Yiddish and Hebrew.”
Music is key to the festival with big-band favourite YID! headlining the In One Voice stage. The Bashevis Singers, Approachable Members of Your Local Community, and Hello Tut Tut, a non-Jewish group that specialises in Klezmer music will also feature, as will community and school choirs and dance troupes.
On the Saturday evening prior (March 17), the music concert, In One Night will also be making a comeback by popular demand. The concert moves from the 2017 location of the Kadimah to the ABC sound stage, where a much bigger crowd will be accommodated.
Local DJ sensation, Japanese Wallpaper (AKA Gab Strum) will play a set featuring his own songs, spiked by some of his favourite Jewish flavoured songs. The line-up will also include YID!, jazz singer Alma Zygier and yiddish tango artists Ghetto Cabaret Orchestra. Comedians, Lainie Chait, Eve Ellenbogen and Eli Landes will take the stage as crowd-goers will have a pop-up bar and food truck offerings made available to them.
