IT was a tough start to life as a professional footballer for Sydney teenager Ryan Blumberg.

After the 18-year-old signed a one-year contract for Charlton Athletic’s Under 23 team earlier this year, he suffered an injury setback just days before the first game of the season, ruling him out for the opening three games.

Fast forward to the beginning of this month and Blumberg has turned his fortunes around by earning a place in his side’s starting 11 in the last three consecutive games, and is slowly settling into life in London.

“It was a special feeling playing my first league game as a pro,” Blumberg told The AJN of the away game against Hull City.

He then played an instrumental part in Charlton’s first win of the season in a home fixture against Leeds.

“It was humbling to make my debut in front of a decent crowd with some friends from home.

“Obviously the jump to the first team was a big step – I was really happy with my performance.”

The former Moriah College student ended September by playing in Charlton’s 4-1 away win against Crewe Alexandra and in the side’s 3-4 loss in Cardiff City.

After a stint at the Nike football Academy, Blumberg is the second-youngest player to have been recruited by the “Addicks”, who have won back-to-back U23 league titles.

He hopes to not only continue his development there, but aim for another title.

“I know we are capable as we have a strong squad, but we have just unfortunately started slow.”

When pressed on his aspirations, Blumberg said the biggest honour would be to represent Australia.

“I really want to push to get involved in the national team set up.

“Unfortunately I am in a bit of an awkward age group with the Australia U23s, but again, with time and good consistent performances, I am confident that I’ll get my chance.”
