PRESIDENT of Technion Australia Dr Ruth Ratner says she is looking forward to “expanding our activities significantly in the coming months”, one of which is the 2017 “SciTech” camp.

The program is an “exceptional opportunity” for students who can demonstrate a real interest in the field of mathematics, science and computing.

The camp sees students spend a month in Haifa over July and August, gaining hands-on experience in the Technion’s research labs under the supervision of faculty members. There is also an exciting program of cultural and social activities.

Newly appointed national executive director Hilary May Black who joined Technion Australia in January, added that special arrangements have been made for SciTech to be open to Australian school students in years 10, 11 and 12, and that successful applicants are invited to apply for a scholarship from Technion Australia to assist them with tuition and travel costs.

This is in line with Technion Australia’s main goal, which is to support academic exchanges and collaborations between the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and Australian students, as well as fundraising in support of Technion research initiatives.

“It’s a terrific opportunity because it involves selected students from all over the world spending a month in Israel at Technion working with academics doing real research in state-of-the-art labs,” May Black said.

“The really fantastic and unique thing about the program is that at the end, the students present their findings to an academic panel at Technion in a symposium format as if they were senior researchers,” May Black explained.

“It gives them an experience of how they would work as a researcher and academic at a world-class university.”

She added that former SciTech students have successfully gone on to study at Technion and said that “many Technion alumni have gone on to become leading minds in world-renowned Israeli start-ups. It is renowned as the home of innovation. By promoting Technion to the Australian community, we promote Israel.”

Technion is set to have an action-packed 2017, with collaborations with universities throughout Australia, including exchanges to and from Technion as well as international academic exchanges.

“It’s all about innovation, collaboration and inspiration,” May Black said. “The fantastic mix of board members at Technion Australia bring with them a wealth of experience in fundraising, medical research, university collaboration and involvement in the Jewish community. It’s going to be a great year.”

To apply, contact Hilary May Black on 0400 435 099 before February 15. Extensions can be arranged through Technion Australia.
