Champers for Lemonade at Tropfest

FILMMAKER Alethea Jones’ seven-minute short film Lemonade Stand was awarded first prize at the Tropfest short-film festival.

And joining in the celebrations was Jewish animator Adam Singer, who was part of a three-member team of animators who added a cartoon element to the story of Benny and his grandfather who run a lemonade stall that comes under the eye of an officious neighbour.

“It was an awesome feeling when the film was announced as the winner,” said Singer, 26, who has been working in film graphics for the past two years.

“Last year we had a meeting with Alethea to discuss the visual style of the animation and then the three of us worked for more than a week on the cartoon characters. It was a group effort,” he said.

Singer watched the Tropfest final at the live screening in Melbourne from Sydney’s Domain to hear the verdict from the judging panel which included Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette and Asher Keddie.

Tropfest founder and director John Polson said: “Lemonade Stand is an incredibly well-made film.”

Jones won a $10,000 prize, a trip to Los Angeles to meet film industry executives, and a Nikon camera.

Jones won last year’s Inside Film award for best short film with When the Wind Changes, as well as the audience choice award and best comedy at Flickerfest and St Kilda Festival.
