THE men’s and ladies’ 2019 Maccabi Golf National Championships titles were so close at Portsea, St Andrews Beach and Moonah Links golf courses, that there were joint winners.

Sixty-one Jewish golfers from NSW, VIC and WA took part in the three-round handicap Stableford tournament from March 1-3.

In the men’s, Victorians Hilton Katz and Alan Goldstone shared championship honours on 110 points, just ahead of runner-up Louis Stuk (VIC) on 108.

Goldstone scored 46 to end day one four strokes ahead of NSW’s Des Cohen, but both struggled in windy conditions the next day, when 35 points enabled Katz to catch up. Goldstone and Katz scored 39 on day three to finish equal first.

Defending champion Ian Schwartz (WA) won in A Grade, Stuk won B Grade, and Goldstone and Katz won C Grade.

In a good sign for the future, 12-year-old talent Raffa Moss (VIC) finished third in B Grade, and Benji Fajnkind (VIC), also 12, came 10th in C Grade.

In the ladies’, NSW’s Myra Salkinder and Victorian Lesley Silberscher were first on 100 points, while Karen Akkerman (VIC) came third on 92.
