MOUNT Sinai College is hoping to raise $8 million to rejuvenate its classrooms and facilities.

The school has been awarded JCA’s annual Capital Appeal to raise funds for a new central hub and arrival area, incorporating a cultural entrance and informal gathering and learning spaces.

There will also be remodelled learning clusters, a new library, new specialist learning centre, new communal kitchen and a new link building over two levels incorporating a Leadership and Innovation Centre.

The appeal is being co-chaired by former Mount Sinai president Ian Levi and his son Ben Levi, who graduated in 1994.

“Mount Sinai has always been a leader in innovation and Judaism, even when I was at school in the 1990s,” Ben, 34, told The AJN.

“When I was at Mount Sinai we had less than 20 students in every year, working bees over the weekends and demountable classrooms.

“It’s now time to invest in collaborative facility to continue to create strong leaders and innovators in our community.”

JCA CEO Bruce Goldsmith said the organisation is excited to see Mount Sinai’s campaign get underway.

“The Mount Sinai College capital appeal is an excellent opportunity for our whole community to get behind one of our most innovative JCA constituents,” Goldsmith said.

“We wish them every success.”

Mount Sinai was founded at the rear of Maroubra Synagogue in 1981.

It was housed in demountable classrooms until the construction of the first brick building in Runic Lane, Maroubra, in 1993.
