Defending champions win back-to-back titles

THE Maccabi Snooker Club’s season has come to a close, seeing reigning champions Abi Newman and Karen Winter, in eight ball, and Brendan Lang, in snooker, go back-to-back.

THE Maccabi Snooker Club’s season has come to a close, seeing reigning champions Abi Newman and Karen Winter, in eight ball, and Brendan Lang, in snooker, go back-to-back.

Newman and Winter were the clear stand-outs in the club’s Premier eightball division, shooting the most frames (67) and highest weekly points (13).

Simon Rudov and Antony Michael took out the A grade, while Michael Gory and Daryl Cohen were the B grade winners.

Meanwhile, Lang was named the club snooker champion for the second consecutive time, edging out his father Michael in the Premier competition.

Lang was at his damaging best all season, recording the highest break (67), most breaks over 20 points (20), and most frames (45).

Other snooker winners included Maurice Chilton (A grade), David Spiegel (B grade), Michael Shaw (C grade), Stephen Rabin (D grade) and Henry Wengier (E grade).

Throughout the year Winter and Lang also picked up wins in the club’s minor tournaments.

Winter won the Premier division of the Lionel Singer 8ball event, with Baron Frankel (A grade), Leon Sawicz (B grade), Bernard Marcus (C grade), Harley Ash (D grade) and Michael Gory (E grade) rounding out the winners.

Lang was also the top player in Group 1 of the Lionel Singer 147 Snooker event, while Nathan Gropman (Group 2), Andrew Lang (Group 3), Michael Lopf (Group 4) and Marc Fridman (Group 5) took out their respective divisions.

The club kicks off the 23rd Annual Victorian Jewish Open tonight (Thursday), which will see the best Jewish players from Melbourne battle it out in the snooker and eight ball championships over the next four weeks.
