Double cup joy for Jackas

AJAX Football Club scored a premiership double at the weekend with the Seniors and Reserves teams enjoying emphatic wins in their grand final matches.
For the first time since 1999, Ajax scored the Seniors-Reserves double triumph and the celebrations that started at the final siren at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday afternoon continued at the David Mandie Pavilion at Albert Park well into the night.
In the Seniors match, AJAX defeated Werribee 19.11 (125) to 7.9 (51) while the Reserves defeated Ormond 10.16 (76) to 8.8 (56).
After winning the second semi- final, Werribee held the psychological advantage but that was blown away in the first quarter of the grand final as AJAX used a strong wind to kick 7.5 to 2.1.
From then the Jackas dominance was never challenged as they outscored Werribee into the wind in the second quarter and wrapped up the match in the “premiership quarter” with a six goals to one.
It was an extra sweet success for the Jackas, after the heartbreak from last year’s three-point preliminary final loss and the haunting memory of the 2006 grand final loss.
Eugene Routman was declared best on the ground by the umpires and was presented with the Michael Ritterman medal by the proud former AJAX champion.
Coach Bernie Sheehy described the win as “absolutely unbelievable”.
AJAX and Werribee will continue their rivalry next year as they have both been promoted to Premier B in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
In the Reserves grand final, AJAX led for most of the game to take out its first premiership since 2003.
The win was doubly sweet for co-captain Josh Gottlieb, who played his 100th game for the club.
Coach Darren Seidl commended his players after the game saying “we finally did it”, and congratulated all the players who had played in the Reserves side at some stage throughout the year.
