Drabkin and Kino shine on VIC Athletics stage

A WEEK after rattling home in the U16 para boys 100m in a PB time, Ori Drabkin has draped himself in gold at the final weekend of the Victorian Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Athletic track.
The talented teenager, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was three, claimed gold in the U16 para 200m and 800m events, completing a hat-trick of wins over the fortnight meet.
The 2017 Maccabi Victoria Jewish All Abilities Sportsperson of the year, began competing in track and field and cross country as part of school sport in 2015, before joining Maccabi Athletics club the following year.
His strong results are reward for effort and bode well for his long-term goals of representing his country at world events.
Israeli import Shanie Landen ran a brilliant heat race to make the 800m open women’s final, where she finished fifth in a solid time of 2:09.83 against a competitive field.
Club life member Jemima Montag continued her strong start to the racing season, easily winning the state open 5km racewalk, in a time of 21:53.02.
Jarrod Zuchowski and Ryan Herman ran well in the under 16 800m heats, but failed to qualify for the final.
Other Maccabi Athletics Club representatives were: Skye Edelstein, who finished seventh in the U14 800m final; Max Rosenberg who threw well in the U18 shot put (13.02m) to place fifth in the final; and Tahj Seelig-Schattner, who also came fifth in a close contest in the women’s U17 high jump final.
Glen Huntley Athletics Club member Noa Kino, who along with Drabkin and Landen have qualified for the Australian T&F Championships next month in Sydney, won the women’s U17 high jump with a leap of 1.62m.
