Dynamic Jewish duo dazzle again

JEWISH golfers Jason Rubenstein and Giora Friede recently tasted success on the international stage, as the Australian pair took out the Audi Quattro Cup World Final in South Africa.

“It was amazing for us,” Rubenstein told The AJN. “It was like a pro event, and with the Audi Centre Sydney being sponsors of NSW Maccabi Golf, it was great that we could win it as part of that relationship.”

After winning the national event last month, the two travelled to the Arabella Golf Course, which Rubenstein knows well, to take on more than 50 other teams from across the globe.

And after two days of superb golf, the pair ended up winning the event ahead of the United States team by only two points.

“It was very close in the end,” Rubenstein said. “It came down to the last hole and we were lucky to get up.”

Rubenstein and Friede got off to a blistering start in the first round, shooting a superb 79 points to be up by four at the halfway point.

But it wasn’t as easy on day two, with the Aussie pair having to hold off a rampaging US team.

With only one point splitting the two countries on the final hole of the tournament, Rubenstein and Friede teamed together to ensure they walked away winners.

“There are no playoffs, so it would have gone to count-back and they would have won,” Rubenstein said.

“So on the final hole, it came down to a bunker shot that I hit onto the green and then a putt from Giora, which he hit for a birdie and the win.”

Despite the tournament now being over, it certainly won’t be the last time the two hit the golf course together.

“We just seem to gel quite well together,” Rubenstein said.

“We weren’t meant to play together from the start, but both our partners pulled out and we got paired up.

“So it was quite ironic how everything fell into place, and next time at a pairs event I’m sure he’ll be at the top of the list.”
