THE Maccabi Touch Football Club held its inaugural Summer Social League finals series on the weekend, with Flamingos Mixed winning the Benny Glattstein Shield after a spirited second-half comeback against Multiple Scores.

The club wrapped up the four-month competition, coordinated by Simon Molnar, with an eight-team finals series gala day in perfect conditions at Christison Park.
“It was a great day out – and not only was the pace of the games impressive for a social competition, so was the players’ competitive spirit,” club president David Weiner told The AJN.
“We weren’t sure what would come of this competition at the start, but to see the intensity and desire in the final capped off a great season, and is a sign that this will be the first of many competitions run by our club.”
Flamingos Mixed, inspired by Maccabi touch leader Yotam Hatzvi, was the most experienced and cohesive team in the league, but the Multiple Scores – filled with plenty of Maccabi rugby talent – gave them an mighty fright despite missing Molnar and Robbie Ezekiel on the day.
Multiple Scorers led 2-0 at the break, with Nathan Ezekiel, Steve Cohen, Keith Friedlander and Jarrod Shein dominating the match.
But a fired-up Flamingos, marshalled by David Krantz and with some strong defence from Lauren Broit, upped the ante to prevail in a dramatic second half.
There were also plenty of other highlights throughout the afternoon.
Shaun Reichman was a standout for the Whakatanes, who bowed out in the preliminary final.
Daniel Kerner, brothers Ben and Daniel Kochan and Nathan Ryba were energetic all afternoon, while the Jew Crew bowed out to Flamingos in the other preliminary final and were one of the other surprise performers on the day.
Shaun Meltzer and David Helfenbaum showed good pace, while Eli and Channan Hect, Ilan Lavan, Gil Pollack and David Helfenbaum were also solid throughout the finals.
Meanwhile, the club’s finals prospects in the Eastern Suburbs Touch Football Association became clearer this week, with jockeying for the remaining spots on the table taking place as The AJN went to print.
