TREASURER Josh Frydenberg has labelled those responsible for vandalising his election campaign posters with antisemitic graffiti as “cowards”.
A poster of Frydenberg with a Hitler moustache was spotted on Auburn Road, Hawthorn, while other vandalised posters were also reportedly noticed.
On Thursday, Frydenberg condemned the graffiti.
“Regardless of one’s political persuasion, vandalism is unacceptable,” Frydenberg said.
“It’s one thing for these cowards to graffiti a sign, but it’s another thing altogether to invoke the horrors of the Holocaust and the evils of Hitler and the Nazis.
“These people should be ashamed of themselves.”
Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dvir Abramovich said it was “sickening” that seven decades after the Holocaust, members of the Jewish community continue to be targeted by vilification and Nazi imagery.
“We stand firmly with Josh Frydenberg and hope that those who perpetrated these crimes are swiftly apprehended and are brought to justice,” Abramovich said.
“We urge leaders across the political spectrum to voice their outrage at this vicious and obscene assault against an elected representative and to say that such abhorrent conduct will never find a home in our nation.”
