ISRAEL Defence Forces Chief of Staff-designate Major-General Benny Gantz arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday morning for a meeting with the committee examining senior civil service appointments, headed by retired Judge Jacob Turkel.
The committee was expected to meet with outgoing Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi later in the day.

After the committee approves or rejects the nomination, it will hand its decision over to the government.

Gantz has refused to comment on the appointment before its approval by the government. All he agreed to say on Sunday was that he has a busy week ahead.

Immediately after the government approves Gantz’s appointment, Ashkenazi will begin handing over his authorities to the new chief of staff.

The process will be much shorter than usual, but army officials estimate that the two will manage to overcome the difficulties thanks to the friendly relations between them and due to the fact that Gantz served as deputy chief of staff until three months ago and is very familiar with the General Staff.
