In a classic case of saving their best until last, the Jeremy Rooz-captained Maccabi B team thumped minor premiers Maccabi A by 4-0 in a one-sided decider that saw Brandon Chilchick and Daniel Danilov score in the first half, and Joshua Shubitz bag a double before full-time.
Maccabi A, led by Justin Seskin, went into the grand final on a 14-game winning streak, and when the two teams last met in the major semi-final two weeks ago, Rooz’s team lost 1-2.
But fired up by a 5-1 preliminary final thrashing of Waverley Old Boys, Maccabi B – which won last year’s division 3 grand final against Maccabi C – were switched on from the opening whistle and determined to get a win over their friendly rivals when it counted most.
“It was pure excitement to win it, and I felt that everyone in our team was flawless – nobody put a foot wrong,” Rooz told The AJN.
“I don’t think you could really have predicted a score like that, but we felt we did generate a lot of chances when we played them in the semis, so we were confident we could do so again.
“The early goal took the pressure off and our second goal really opened things up – we just felt in complete control.
“I think our midfielders Brandon (Chilchick), Jonathan (Abrams) and Sam (Benda) were very effective and our defence kept its structure.
“I’d just like to thank all our players, and our coach Adam Hendler.”
For the losing team, Ryan Edelmuth and Josh Frank were the standouts and fought hard all game.
In the women’s competition, Maccabi’s division 4 team won their preliminary final against Waverley 3-0.
Maccabi’s goals were scored by Natalie Neumann, Sil Robertson and Dalia Bloom – the latter scoring her 30th for the season, an outstanding effort.
They will play Maroubra United in the grand final on September 10.
