Heimish hip hop comes to Yavneh

Breakfast duo and comedians Matt Okine and Alex Dyson acted as masters of ceremonies for the event and welcomed the crowd of 200 students and teachers to a special gig from Aussie hip-hop artist Seth Sentry.
Strum, who goes by the stage name Japanese Wallpaper, kicked off proceedings with his newest release Between Friends which was recorded at the Triple J studios in Sydney last month.
At the end of his performance, students chanted Strum’s nickname “Jap Wow” in encouragement for their talented friend.
Sentry, former recipient of a Triple J Unearthed award and Channel V’s Oz Artist of the Year winner, whipped the crowd into a frenzy of bopping heads and tapping toes.
Strum said it was a “great experience” and thanked the school and his friends. “Everyone was really supportive and it was a great day,” he said.
Dyson told The AJN Triple J were thrilled to see Strum perform on his home turf, while show producer Ollie Wards said he particularly enjoyed the mushroom cholent provided by the school and looks forward to hearing what Strum churns out in the future.
Stating he was extremely proud of his student’s achievements, principal Roy Steinman said, “What singles him out is not only his enormous talent, but his humility and compassion for others. The concert was a highlight for us and provided our students with an incredible opportunity to see Gab in action, sharing the platform with well-known rapper Seth Sentry.”
He added, “It was really cute to see all the kids bringing their Friday cholent into the rock concert. I’m sure Triple J found it most amusing too!”
Strum, 17, is set for two sold-out gigs this month at Melbourne’s Sheeban concert venue.
As his fellow students are too young to attend the performance, Strum said a big part of last Friday’s concert was having the opportunity to share his music with his friends.
