Howard in good spirits at Central

Former Australian prime minister John Howard (pictured, second on the left next to Danny Taibel, Rabbi Levi Wolff and David Dinte) enjoyed a genuinely warm reception as special guest at a Shabbat service and dinner at Central Shule last Friday night, receiving a standing ovation as a proven friend of Israel.

After a delicious meal of challah, matzo ball soup and roast chicken, Howard accepted – in good spirits – a shot of whisky poured by Rabbi Wolff, who told the audience of more than 250 “Howard’s supportive words for Israel and the Jewish people were always followed by actions, and that unwavering support was always there when we needed it the most.”

Howard said “I remember when I was asked to help open this rebuilt synagogue 20 years ago, and the warmth I have received from you tonight has been quite overwhelming – the rabbi even gave me a single malt!”
