FIVE out of the top 10 richest Aussies are Jewish, according to this year’s BRW Rich 200 list, which was released on June 27.

Anthony Pratt was named the richest man in Australia and the second richest person in the country, behind mining magnate Gina Rinehart, worth $7.64 billion.

The global chairman of Pratt and Visy Industries and his family recorded a $1.7 billion rise in their wealth from last year, which saw them jump two spots on the list.

Despite increasing his wealth by $290 million in the last year, fellow Jew Frank Lowy, founder of Westfield, dropped to fourth richest person, worth $7.16 billion, while Swiss-based Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive officer of Glencore Xstrata, retained his spot as fifth richest person in the country, worth $6.63 billion.

Property developer Harry Triguboff, founder and managing director of Meriton, is ranked eighth on the list, with wealth of $5.5 billion.

Melbourne shopping centre magnate John Gandel sits behind him at ninth spot, at $4.08 billion.

Hotelier Charlotte Vidor, co-founder of Toga Group, is fourth place on the richest woman ladder. Vidor and her husband Ervin are worth $740 million.

The fifth richest woman in Australia is Melbourne-based Naomi Milgrom, who owns the Sussan Group, worth $520 million.

Generation Y online retail entrepreneur Ruslan Kogan, 31, made his debut on the list at number 162, with wealth of $320 million.

Sharing his tips on how to be rich at an event recently, Triguboff, whose wealth increased by $550 million from last year, said: “Get a loan from the bank and start working.”

“Do not be afraid to mortgage [your home]. Whatever interest you will pay, you will always be covered by capital gain,” he explained.

Triguboff said you must be comfortable in what you do, and appreciate the people with whom you work.

“It doesn’t matter what you do, you have to surround yourself with people that you can trust. The people here [in Australia] are honest. They’re not only honest with money, but they’re honest in how they work, which is most important. I love this country for that reason. You must have people who are responsible.”

He added, “Always remember, the more money you will make, the harder you will work, because there’s more to watch. If you want easy work, don’t make a lot of money.”

But never work too hard, Triguboff said, “because when you are tired, you are not alert. Tiredness produces very poor results”.
