TWO years after joining Melbourne Hebrew Congregation (MHC), Rabbi Avrohom Jacks has assumed the role of chief minister.

He replaces Rabbi Dovid Rubinfeld, who has held the position since 2003, after initially joining the synagogue as chazan in 1989.

Reflecting on this appointment, Rabbi Jacks said, “Each chief minister has the opportunity to leave his impression on the community and with my leadership, I would like to see the congregation continue to flourish in many different ways, in particular by celebrating significant lifecycle events.”

Originally from South Africa, Rabbi Jacks studied for smicha in Israel before heading up a shul in Montreal, Canada.

“Rabbi Jacks is already well known in the community and is universally liked and respected,” said MHC’s acting president, Malcolm Brown.

“This transition has been underway for the past two years and today’s announcement confirms his appointment and standing within the community.

“A change like this comes along rarely and it is a very important step for the community.”

Although he has stepped down as chief minister, Rabbi Rubinfeld will continue his association with the shul in the roles of chazan rishon and rabbi emeritus.
